Most persons we serve in direct care in the social services have experienced trauma and have been severely impacted by these experiences. Neglecting to address trauma can have extremely damaging implications on the effectiveness of our working relationships with our client populations. Trauma -informed care is an approach that offers ways to engage people with histories of trauma, recognize the presence of trauma symptoms, acknowledge the role that trauma has played in their lives, and, to support and encourage their sense of empowerment and resilience. Additionally, trauma – informed care is a person-centered approach that is grounded in the acknowledgment that traditional service approaches can re-traumatize our clients and their family members.

- Identify the signs & symptoms of trauma.
- Explore the negative impact of trauma on the bio-psycho-social domains.
- Compare and contrast non-trauma-informed care vs. trauma-informed care.
- Discuss ways to reduce further trauma while working with client populations.
- Identify the signs & symptoms of secondary- trauma and learn ways to combat and reduce the negative impact on direct service staff.

Agenda
9:00 am – What is trauma, negative impacts, and how we experience it
10:15 am – Break
10:30 am – Non-trauma vs. trauma-informed care, agency/environmental triggers of re-traumatization, and ways to reduce further trauma
11:45 am – Secondary trauma vs. burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma
12:15 pm – Close
Participants are required to stay logged-in for the Q&A portion of the training for successful completion, as it is part of the educational portion of this course.

Therapist, and a Senior Community Lecturer, The Ohio State University College of Social Work
Gwendolyn Rees (she/her), MSW, LISW-S is a social worker with nearly twenty years of experience working in both the not-for-profit and private sectors. Gwendolyn has supervised social workers in case management, behavioral health, and medical settings. Gwendolyn is a therapist in private practice and a Senior Community Lecturer at The Ohio State University College of Social Work. She is a training facilitator on various topics related to the profession of Social Work as well as other clinical and social service fields. Her approach as a presenter is much like her approach clinically and in the classroom— eclectic, engaging, and collaborative.
Evaluations will be distributed within 24 hours after the training via email. You will receive a link where you can submit the completed evaluation. The links come from our Qualtrics survey software, so please be sure to check your spam folder. Evaluations must be completed to receive CE credits. Certificates will be emailed to you within 30 days of the training date.
